# Start Your Trezor Journey: Secure Self-Custody Made Simple

Welcome to the official starting point for your Trezor hardware wallet. Whether you have just unboxed a new Trezor Safe 3, Safe 5, or are setting up a classic Model T, this guide will walk you through the essential steps to initialize your device, create a secure backup, and begin managing your crypto assets with confidence. Your journey to true financial sovereignty begins here.

## Step 1: Download the Official Trezor Suite

Before connecting your device, you must download the official Trezor Suite application. Trezor Suite is the secure desktop and web interface that replaces the older browser wallet, providing a seamless environment to manage your portfolio, send and receive transactions, and adjust device settings . Visit the official download page to get the version compatible with your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). For mobile users, an Android APK is also available . Always ensure you are downloading from the official domain to avoid phishing attempts.

## Step 2: Connect and Authenticate Your Device

Once Trezor Suite is installed and running, connect your hardware wallet using the provided USB-C cable (or wireless connection for supported models like the Safe 7). Trezor Suite will immediately initiate a security check to verify the authenticity of your device. This cryptographic check confirms that your hardware was genuinely manufactured by Trezor and has not been tampered with in transit . Follow the on-screen prompts on both your computer screen and the Trezor device itself to complete this verification.

## Step 3: Install Firmware and Create Your Wallet

Your Trezor ships without firmware for security reasons. Trezor Suite will guide you to install the latest firmware version. You can choose between the **Standard** firmware (supporting a wide range of coins and features) or the **Bitcoin-only** firmware for a streamlined experience . After installation, your device will restart.

Next, you will be prompted to create a new wallet. If this is your first time, select "Create new." The device will generate your unique private keys internally, ensuring they never touch the internet. If you are restoring an existing wallet, you can select "Recover" and enter your backup words directly on the device .

## Step 4: Secure Your Wallet Backup (Recovery Seed)

This is the most critical step. Your wallet backup—often called the recovery seed—is the only way to regain access to your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Your Trezor will display a series of words (typically 12, 20, or 24 words depending on your model and settings) one by one on its screen .

**Crucial Security Rules:**

* **Write the words down manually** on the provided backup cards in the exact order shown.
* **Never** take a photo of the words, store them in a text file, or save them in a password manager. Digital copies are vulnerable to hackers .
* **Never** enter your recovery words into any computer or website. Only ever input them directly onto the Trezor device itself if you need to restore a wallet .

After you write down the words, the device will ask you to confirm them by selecting specific words to verify you recorded them correctly. This is your final chance to review the backup before the device locks it away .

## Step 5: Set a PIN for Physical Security

Protect your device from unauthorized physical access by setting a strong PIN. The PIN entry is performed on the Trezor device itself, using the keypad layout displayed on its screen. This ensures that even if your device is connected to a compromised computer, your PIN remains secure . If someone steals your Trezor without the PIN, they cannot access your funds.

## Step 6: Manage Your Crypto and Explore Features

Once setup is complete, you can enable the coins you wish to manage within Trezor Suite. The platform natively supports major assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum (including all ERC-20 tokens), Cardano, Litecoin, XRP, and Dogecoin . For a complete list of supported assets and third-party wallet integrations (for coins like Monero or Tezos), refer to the official [supported coins page](https://trezor.io/coins).

Beyond simple storage, Trezor Suite allows you to:

* **Buy, Sell, and Swap:** Use integrated partners to trade crypto directly within the app.
* **Connect to dApps:** Use WalletConnect to interact with thousands of decentralized applications and DeFi protocols while keeping your private keys offline .
* **Monitor Your Portfolio:** View historical charts and manage multiple accounts for each cryptocurrency .

## Important Notes for a Smooth Experience

**Trezor Bridge Deprecation:** If you are an older user, note that the standalone Trezor Bridge application is deprecated. You no longer need to install it separately; the necessary communication drivers are built directly into Trezor Suite. If you have an old version of Bridge installed, it is recommended to uninstall it to prevent conflicts .

**Official Resources:** For troubleshooting, guides on specific models (like the [Safe 3 setup guide](https://trezor.io/guides/trezor-devices/trezor-safe-3/get-started-with-the-trezor-safe-3)), or to purchase authentic accessories, always refer to the official [Trezor website](https://trezor.io) and [support center](https://trezor.io/support).

By following these steps, you have taken full control of your digital assets. Remember: with Trezor, your keys are generated and stored offline, ensuring that you—and only you—have the power to authorize transactions.
